While I haven't read (and don't intend to read) the fanfic people claim the books are based on and so can't speak for the plot itself, there's a lot of stuff that's pretty directly lifted and reworked a bit beyond "common themes/ideas," though maybe not quite on the level of Rowling apparently using the cover to Books of Magic and the basic character description to design Harry.
