some stuff I've been watching
Finally got around to watching season 2 of 4400. I've been told it wasn't as good as season 1, but I think I liked it about as much. The Isabelle stuff is a bit much at time, but the season worked well, especially Alanna, who I had doubts about atfirst(I think a part of me automatically expects Tom and Diana to hook up, even though they aren't remotely like that.) Not the best thing on TV, but better than a lot of the rest.
About the same as series 1, but with more focus on the love triangle. Not 100% happy with how that turned out(how the dealt with the one that didn't get the guy, specifcally...poor girl...) Main thing about it, of course, is Robert Carlyle playingthe straightman in a town of lovable loonies and hoping no one notices he's way too qualified for a small town because he doesn't want to leave.
I've been wanting to watch Numb3rs for a while, and am glad I finally got around to it. It's another "look at how the police work and here's a twist" show, but the only one of that type that's remotely interesting to me(I don't lump Monk into this category, as Monk is essentially a classic Agatha Christie style detective-specifically, Poirot, in modern times, and taken to the extreme) The cases themselves are interesting enough, but the main thing is the interactions between the brothers and their father. I like that they don't make things unnecessarily complicated and have absurd levels of conflict...they don't get each other, they don't understand what's going on in each other's heads, but they love each other and the rest is rather irrelevent. Both brothers, however, really need a good whack upside the head in regards to thier love lives. I mean, really Charlie...the girl you're nuts about is essentially begging you to ask her out, and it takes eternity for the wheels in your head to register it..atwhich point, someone interrupts and you run and hide...*shakes head*
The sole animecontribution. Peace Maker is about the Shinsengumi and has a feel very similar to Kenshin, only bloodire and the dark parts are even darker. There was one episode that was concerningly reminiscent of the Beasts arc of Blade of the Immortal, but just as well done. The main character was really, really annoying...if he's really 15, then he makes Ed in FMA the epitome of poise and maturity. I kid you not. After a few episodes I started ignoring their insisting he was 15 and pretended he was 11~, which was what he looked and acted like. His brother deserves a medal for tolerating him. It amuses me that Saito here and Saito in Kenshin are simultameously exactly alike and polar opposites. Actually, Kenshin alone would make Peace Maker an interesting watch, as many of Kenshin's foes(specifically, almost all the ones who started out as enemies and ended up somewhere between friends and non-enemies) are based on members of the Shinsengumi, and one of the larger supporting characters, Saito, is from the Shinsengumi. It has a light and hyper exterior, but is brutally honest when it comes to the realities of war and the time period and the lives the characters lead, regardless of whether or notthey chose them. Main character aside, highly recommended(and aftera little while, he's only marginally the main character)
