The thing about the curse is that it's as well defined as such things tend to be in oral tales...but that doesn't work as well when you make it a major plotpoint of a book, series or movie. Then, you have to define it a lot better. The fact that the only example we have is of how to NOT fulfill your duties and be free of the curse doesn't help.
