I only know about the film-LOTR RPS crazy indirectly by way of what showed up on Fandom Wank, but the tinhat brigade (http://wiki.fandomwank.com/index.php/Domlijah) do seem just terrifyingly delusional.

The link itself is nothing too scary, just a little bit of background description about the tinhat Domlijah fans (who are convinced that Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood are REALLY a couple and there's a huge coverup going on to present them as straight...because of course we all know how much the fangirls hate pretty gay boys...) Following the links they present, OTOH, will get you deeper and deeper into The Crazy in all its glorious sanity-raping detail.

It can be strangely compelling reading, particularly the Wiki which makes it so easy to flit back and forth through lovingly hyperlinked documentation of multiple subspecies of batshit insanity.

My Favoritest Subthread Ever remains this gem (http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/978391.html?thread=124229079#t124229079), wherein a passing comment about a ridiculously lengthy Gundam Wing mpreg fic led to some improvisational parody brilliance.
