Her recently stuff is beautiful and mysterious, but not as involving as a story as the earlier stuff is. Is it The Sorceress and the Cygnet you have? I enjoy her newer stuff, but it doesn't live in my heart the way the Riddlemaster series does.
You don't need to read Death of the Necromancer first. The main character in Death is the father of the lead in the "Fall of Ile-Rien" series, but you're told what you need to know about him for the current series. You can always look at Death as a prequel.
