True Love is a drunken man raping his petrified employee on the floor of his bar

Just in case there were any doubts whatsoever that yes, one of Entertainment Weeklies "Greatest Fictional Couples of All Time" really DID begin with a brutal, 100% unambiguous rape, I have located the scenes on youtube.

Note the "you do this to me" talk, the crying, and the trying to leave, among other things.

...why did the girl not leave, the first time he stalked away? ugh. I know why, of course, because that was how the script was written. But, damn. I hope the women of today understand that if a situation is making you uncomfortable, you should leave.

This is actually painful to watch, because neither of them are compelling.

Also. Now I'm highly confused. How could you 'ship this? The man is ugly. I'm totally lost for how anyone could think it was the greatest love story ever.

Not to mention, the tilty-vision rape bit made me o.O

All of this just leads back to: women need to be raped for them to like sex. Apparently.

I can KIND OF understand why she didn't just leave...she's very young(not even 18, iirc) and he's twice her age and her boss...by the time she realized she could be in trouble, she was too scared to try anything. But yeah, mostly it's the script. And, I'm sure, we're supposed to take her not leaving as subconscious desire.

And people don't just ship them...they're widely considered to be the best soap opera couple EVER.

And it's not just "women need to be raped to like sex" but "women need men to tell them what they want...by force if necessary."

"women need men to tell them what they want...by force if necessary."

Yes. And people still accept this and love it, even in these modern times.

I've always found the whole Luke-and-Laura worship not just mind boggling but repulsive. As is Tony Geary, btw. What a slimy looking little weasel.

Personally, I think "repulsive" is being kind. The fact that that is essentially viewed as daytime drama's greatest romance disgusts me more than there are words for. I was watching General Hospital when their son found out about it...listening to her defend him and his pity party made me despise them both. "Oh, he raped me but I forgave him so you should too." "I raped her and I hate myself for but I lllloooooovvvvveeeeee her."

I think fans go "oh, well, but later he rescues her from evil Russians and he saves her from rape, so it's ok..." or some such...

I never understood the Luke and Laura thing. Not only is Anthony Geary really unattractive, the whole rape thing is so Cro Magnon romance novel cliche that it's really offensive now days. There's no way to defend it.

I remember Lucky finding out about it (back in the day when he was played by the very cute Jonathan Jackson) and me completely understanding why he hated his father. That would be the correct reaction.

That that is considered the greatest soap opera romance of all time makes me despair for half the human race. I was watching GH when that came out...the feeling that I was supposed to be sympathizing with Luke for being shunned by his son and find it more acceptable because he hated himself for it? Really didn't help.

Keep going back and you'll find what has to be the worst "best couples list" ever.

I am greatly disturbed. Not only by the rape, but also by the set: looks like John Travolta is gonna bust out any minute and start doing that *point to the sky and lean on one hip*-move from Saturday Night Fever.

I give the set allowances, as it was an 80s club.
