Last Exile eps 9-12

The engineers seem to decide it's Mullin's turn to be bullied.  Apparently, though, they tone it down when the person has a prayer of fighting back.  I do, though, get a thrill out of the one who beat up Claus getting his butt kicked by Dio later on.  Mullin also seems to have a crush on Tatiana.  He'll be lucky if she ever notices he exists.

Lavi and Claus enter another race, giving me more Episode 1 flashbacks.  Dio toys with Claus some more, then somehow gets Alex to let him stay on board Silvana and run all over the place.  I worry about Alex, that I do.  Meanwhile, Lavie quite sensibly tells Claus  that she doesn't want to be navigator for a fighter pilot, and that she'll support him from the safety of the ship.  More anime and manga heroines should follow her example and develop a survival instinct.  I'm not sure what I think of Dio, yet.  He's pretty interesting, but his obsession with Claus is rather saddening.  I suppose he didn't bother to look beyond "good pilot."

Alex practices his emo some at an auction, and gets threatened by the father of the wuss captain he took down a couple episodes back.  Dad seems pretty decent and fairly interesting...I guess the good genes skipped a generation.  Alex gets to practice his cape tossing some more.  Speaking of fathers, it seems the king/emperor/whatever has a daughter on board the Silvana, and since Alex isn't playing nice, he's wondering if she's considering treason.  I assume he means Tatiana or Sophia.  Tatiana seems too obvious, so I'm going with Sophia.

Meanwhile, the much hyped Vincent, old friend of Alex's, appears.  Vincent is a coffee fiend.  He's also supposed to make Alex come home and play nice, or take him out.  Old friends are always the best at such things.  Some people love "enemies as lovers."  I think that's fine and dandy when it suits the characters, but I love "friends turned enemies."  Though I doubt it'll last in this case.  Vincent is able to be marvelously unaffected and undepressed by Alex's angst, and seems to wear bright and shiny clothes so that the world won't drown in the gloom and doom of Alex's black wardrobe.  Naturally, Alex doesn't play nice and go home, so they have a lovely duel of ships.  They also manage to carry on a conversation from their respective captain's chairs, despite having no communications devices.  It was admirable.

Vincent manages to make the Silvana go down.  Claus sees this from his cockpit on does some "NOOOO!!!"-ing.  I agree with him...most of the more interesting people were on the ship at the time.  Dio also reads Al a poem that makes her go all glowy and make things go boom.  This makes Sophia fall against Alex when the ship rocks, and she seems to take the opprtunity to snuggle.  I don't really blame her, but that much repressed angst could be contagious.

The female characters continue to be more interesting than the male ones.  I have no real objections to that.  Actually, Sophia is shaping up to be my favorite character.  She reminds me somewhat of a combination of Hawkeye(FMA) and Noin(Gundam Wing.)  As they're my favorite and 3rd favorite characters of their respective series, that only makes sense.

Al remains incredibly cute.

Meanwhile, I think I'm coming down with a cold

Why is everyone I know getting sick?! And why am I (not being sick) the only one actually seeing a doctor?!

Personally, I'm just blaming the coworkers who were sick most of last week...
