Anyone have any opinions on the following:

Banner of the Stars
D.N.Angel
Elfen Lied
Gantz
Serial Experiments Lain The f-list, it disapproves.
Speed Grapher
Vandread

Also, Blue Seed OVA: Yes? Maybe? "Think 'Slayers OVA'?" Etc?

Philip K. Dick -- I seem to recall Red griping about his stuff in a SF class.

No, I loved him! He was some of the best stuff I read that quarter! "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" was hilarious!

Hrm, I must be getting senile...I could have sworn there was one of the usual critic's darlings that you really couldn't stand. Delany, maybe?

Ummm, it was Epileptic, Black Hole, and Solarius that I hated with the fury of a thousand firebenders on fire. At noon.

Heh, Stanislaw Lem is one of my favorite writers...but while Solaris is the book he's best known for, at least in the English-speaking world, it's one of the last things I'd use to introduce someone to his work. His lighter Borgesian satirical pieces are way more accessible and friendly, and they also had the benefit of better, direct translations. For some bizarre reason, while all of his other stuff was translated directly from the original Polish to English, the only English version of Solaris is based on the French translation. Call me cynical, but I don't think adding in an extra layer of filtering like that is going to do a book any favors.

No, I can't imagine it would. However, I don't think there is enough translations in the world to make me enjoy/like that book.
