comics: Wonder Woman #18-20

Gail Simone continues to be the first WW writer in ages to not make me want to hurt something, even if Diana's voice is still a bit too pop-modern, and she seems to want to give Diana a romance.

#18: Gail Simone, why are you having Diana court Nemesis? Nemesis is not “Diana’s boyfriend” material. He is “that likable dork who thinks he’s all that but isn’t who crushes on Diana without a chance, but who is clearly meant to eventually marry some nice, competent, managing woman who will keep him in line.” Though, was that the first canon confirmation that Diana is bi? Or at least, almost canon? I think that’s the first time an author has actually stated that any early romances Diana had would have been with other women, while indicating that she has had them.

Also, KHUNDS! I don’t think I’ve seen them in ages. And Diana has fangirls all over the universe. Aww. But why am I being given a GL who is not Guy?

#19: GL-who-is-not-Guy is named “Procanon.” I do not know why, but that cracks me up. I’m very, very happy that Etta got to be the one to really save the Khund empire while Diana was breaking things. It seems she didn’t get to do anything but talk about how Diana was so wonderful she couldn’t hold Steve possibly liking her against Diana for ages. (Especially annoying since Perez devoted a lot of time to showing that the modern Steve and Diana weren’t like that, and he was all about Etta.) I wonder, though, how Khund Girl got a GL ring. Does GL-who-is-not-Guy just carry an extra around? But what is with Nemesis giving the speech about being unworthy of Diana and untrustworthy while staring at Diana’s picture? I don’t want him to be a traitor even more than I don’t want him dating Diana! *frets*

#20: I have no idea what’s going on here yet, but so far, it’s all kinds of awesome. Time travel! Beowulf! Swords! Soulless men with glowing red eyes! Who want Diana to kill the devil!

So is Wonder Woman worth adding to my list of comics I should give a chance?

And where would be a good place to start? I already like Gail Simone, and am reading her run of Birds of Prey.

Gail Simone's run started, I think, with #13 of the current run. I recommend tracking down the George Perez trades, and maybe the Phil Jiminez ones, as well as Hiketia. If you can find back issues, #26-60~ are also by Perez and very good, but not collected in a trade.

Heehee. You had the same reaction I did to seeing the Khunds.

I did that to another friend of mine, who isn't quite into the whole DC and/or Legion side of things, and just looked at me funny.

GL rings are flitting around the universe constantly, I'm sure. ;)

As good as Gail's Wonder Woman is, SOMEthing about it feels, I dunno, flat. I like it, but it feels weak for what I've come to expect from Gail, who should really be knocking it out of the park on this book, it's good, but not "Simone Good" I guess is the best way to describe it.

I think Simone is still trying to find a balance between her voice, and the voice Perez created for Diana. She's operating within all the more recent stuff, but seems to mostly be looking at Perez's run for how to write Diana and her world, and that's a very different tone from what she usually writes. Hopefully, she'll settle in soon. Even if she doesn't, it's far better than the books has been in ages and ages.
