*sigh* I watched this online at the official site (where they showed it for free) a week after each new episode debuted. I don't have cable so I was happy they went that route. Now I plan on getting the DVDs in the hopes there are some extras, behind-the scenes, bloopers, and all.
Please note that all my responses in the comments are tailored to not reveal ANY spoilers for the whole season and is based on my reaction from the first two episodes of the TV series. Obviously, my reactions changed as the show went on.
The time-travel part was probably the weakest part of the series in the first episode. Get over that and you can enjoy the rest.
I am one of the few who actually doesn't care about Sarah. Her story for me was done with T2 so I was disappointed to see her still being the lead "narrator" when the show started. Her reactions and thoughts are pretty predictable if you watched the first two movies. She is a known quantity. John is a bit more interesting to me because he isn't. He is a teenager now who is in danger and is majorly screwed in that he knows he won't have what everyone else expects out of life (dating, wife, kids, family, a job). He is basically in Sarah's position also from the first movie. The innocent who has someone who will not stop for any reason to kill him. What keeps him from going loco? What ties him to keep trying no matter what? Will his mother ever quit "coddling him" so much as she does in the first episode to let him start becoming the leader that the world "needs"? As you pointed out, I would expect him to be trained a hell of a lot more than he is by now by his mom or whoever she could "shack up" with.
My other main interest is Cameron. I like Summer Glau which is one of the reasons why I gave this show a shot. I enjoyed her take as River. I love her as Cameron too. She gives off this innocent vibe while kicking-butt. She is as innocent and beautiful as a a wild animal that will kill you and not understand why people are so surprised at it's actions. I have to wonder how she views humanity, John and her role in all of this. She is the most "unknown" element in the show. I like the mystery of that. I want to know more. I want to know her background and what she is willing to do and what will happen if her and Sarah are ever at odds over an issue? Who wins? Especially if it messes up her assignment in her eyes. Plus, what does skynet and the terminators plan on doing once they win the war? That was never really addressed in either movie. What is it's goal?
There is more I would post, but that goes into spoiler sections past episode 1 so I'll stop here.
I always liked the ironies of the films. The fact that if no one was sent back to protect Sarah meant that Skynet wouldn't have been "built from" the FIRST terminator's CPU damaged "brain". What happens to the terminator if it had succeed in it's mission and would wander aimless without direction till "judgement day" to find it never arrived (going by the movie DVD and the novelization). I think that is why I liked watching and reading stories from this mythos is because it does leave you thinking and wondering about the possiblities and the what ifs.
