I wish there were a few more positive parental and authority figures in these books
Quite a few of those negative parental portrayals are based on DWJ's own parents, who from most accounts sound quite horrible. If you ever read Time of the Ghost, that one is probably most autobiographical of her books, since the basic situation and several events in it actually happened to her and her siblings.
Knowing this, it's very understandable why most of her parents, mothers especially, are portrayed in such a negative light.
