manga: The Young Magician Vol 2-3

Volume 2 follows in volume 1’s footsteps by being just barely on the right side of incomprehensible, with an added abrupt and initially unexplained shift in narrative focus about halfway through the volume. Thankfully, by the end of volume 3, it becomes clear that the first volume and a half were to explain part of Carno’s angsty past, and the main story takes off about halfway through volume two.

For reasons I do not fully understand, Carno is now a prisoner/flunky of the Holy Knights who were standing around and talking about how he’s too evil to live in the first volume. I can kinda tell them apart when they’re all together, but it’s a bit harder to tell which is which when there’s only one around. Carno also haves demon wings and supposedly likes to see people bleed.

In volume 2, we meet our other main character, Ibuki. Ibuki is a cheerful, sake-loving boy from a shinto family who supposedly has power that only comes along once a millennium. When a demon steals the souls of his family, he punishes it by altering it so that there are two cartoon cats growing out of the demon that repeatedly hit it and say “spanky” a lot.

Ibuki is special.

He also knows a demon named Nagi who wants to know more about the “ether” that gives magicians powers and possibly creates demons like her. She usually manifests as a clothing-optional slinky blonde, but can appear male for occasions such as sneaking up on Ibuki in the men’s room. Ibuki is surprisingly accepting of this.

Carno meets Ibuki when he goes to the convenience store Ibuki works at and wins a drawing. Later, he angsts about how life is meaningless because he has no one to be happy with about winning the contest. He also thinks about how life is a joke or some such because he’s sent to kill Ibuki, the “Congratulations!” guy.

Carno’s angst is special.

Short version: Neat characters. Confusing plot.
