This may be the first near future post-apocalyptic tale of faerie that I’ve read. I’m exceptional fond of post-apocalyptic fiction, especially near-future, and am one of the perhaps 5 people on the internet who aren’t tired of the fae, as long as they don’t just have the serial numbers filed off.

It’s been several decades since the war between humans and faerie ended, leaving both worlds all but ruined. Technology as we know it no longer exists, and humanity lives in small, isolated towns. At 15, Liza was born years after the war ended, and so has never known a world where her father’s strict rules didn’t control her life, and the lives of everyone around her. One of these rules is that any child who is faeborn must be left in the wilds, either to die, or to be taken by the fae. This includes his own child, a daughter, which results in his wife eventually leaving, kicking off a series of events where Liza learns secrets about both herself and the town, and eventually sets out to find both her mother and faerie.

The book includes many traditional themes regarding the fae, but in a setting that gives it a fresh perspective. Most actual information beyond the basic setups is rather spoilery, but it’s very much well worth reading, with interesting but direct worldbuilding and a deepness to the magic that makes up for it starting rather abruptly. I admit, though, that I finished it more curious about the war and immediate aftermath than anything else.
