June comics, part 1

So, know what was NOT in my shipment of June comics?  New Warriors #1, that’s what.  Rrrr…I don’t care if I’ve already been well spoiled for it and skimmed it at Hastings…I didn’t get MY copy.

Hopefully, Hastings will still have #1 when I go next week.

As compensation, I read every New Warriors related comic that I DID get.

Loners #3: *unchains inner Generation X fan*  Dear cover artist: Penny’s leather mummy suit is so she won’t shred people and furniture jut by brushing up against them.  Cutting a bunch of holes in the outfit completely defeats the purpose.  At least Moline seems to realize that.  Unfortunately,  Cebulski seems to think Penny only has sharp claws.  Planting one on a guy and putting her hand on his shoulder should have resulted in his only having half a face and his having one VERY messed up shoulder.  It’s possible she’s learned how to soften her body so that she’s not effectively a walking razor with diamond skin, but I have a feeling it’s a case of not learning about the character before using them.  Speaking of which:  Woman calling herself Michiko Musashi?  I don’t know who you are, but call me if you run into my favorite New Warrior.  In other news, right before she sliced into Julie, did it seem to anyone else that Penny wasn’t seeing Julie, but someone else?  It’s probably just the artist trying to make Julie look more “pure” and “:good,” but her hair and top both looked a little different(yes, I’m specifically wondering if anyone else thinks Penny was thinking of Paige there)

Thunderbolts #115:  And finally, nasty things happen to the nasty people.  I’ve decided that I like American Eagle on principle(though I rather liked him already)  I would like to know, though, when Melissa’s brain stopped working.  And NuPenance really needs to do something besides wallow in his emo and try to bash his own brains out.

Nova #3: *insert shojo-manga-like hearts and flowers poofing into existence around Megan and floating to this book* Seriously, there are no words for how much I love this series (actually, it about matches my sheer hatred for the last volume…) Granted, some of it is because it’s the only decent handling of the Civil War garbage I’ve seen, but hey, whatever works.  Thunderbolts try to arrest Richie and read him his domestic rights?  He reads them their intergalactic rights.  Iron Man tries to preach about how tough it’s been on Earth lately? Richie points out the only reason there is an Earth(or anything else) is because a few people managed to deal with all the space rulers and get over their issues with each other to take on Annihilus.  And there was a scene where I *gasp* LIKED Iron Man(then he did the preaching thing 2 pages later and I got over it)  Stripped down translation:  Moonstone:  “He’s a New Warrior! We have to hate them on principle! We have clearance!”  Iron Man: “Shove it.  By the way, I’m calling your boss to have you sent to the corner for time out.”  Sadly, even in a book that realizes how absurd Civil War is and avoids taking a stance on it, NuPenance still lives to wallow in his emo.  At least he wasn’t trying to bash his brain out, here.

Annihilation: Conquest: Prologue: ^&^*&($&($(($*($!!!!  $%#$^#%&#%&$%&$%!!!!  HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS AS SOON AS THE STARLORDS SHOWED UP!???!!!?? I’m one of the 5 or so people who seem to like or remember the *blip blip blip* crossover.   *flails around some* Ok, so probably, no one else will be as excited about the big reveal at the end as I am.  Seriously though, even without that, it’s like all my hatred for the earthbound Marvel events of the last several years(everything since Disassembled) is balanced by my love for Annihilation.  As an aside, though I’m not sure I’ll ever call her “Quasar,” Phyla is really growing on me(have I mentioned recently that I really, REALLY want a Vell family reunion?) and I’m liking Moondragon a lot more here than I ever have before.  And Quill was seriously channeling Mal Reynolds from Firefly here.  This is a good thing.

Well, in defense of Penn...Hollow, this may not be any version we've seen before, and her abilities may not be precisely as we know them from previous variants.

I never really got how one would get cut by just touching say, her cheek, anyways...

And I totally less than three Julie right now.

*starts popping the little Nova hearts on principle alone*

You're not the only one who loved that ending to Conquest. =)

I *love* these cosmic events. THAT is how you write cataclysm and make it matter.

See also: World War Hulk. But that's more because, damn, it's nice to see Tony getting tossed around like a canned doll.

I have no idea what you said there...

They've stated that it's the Generation X Penny before, more than once, so if it's not her, they have some explaining to do. And hey, it masy not quite make sense that her skin is umpteenbillion razor blades packed so closely together than they look like a solid crystal or jewel, but that's what it is.

Unfortunately, most writers touching Generation X the last few years seem to completely miss the point of the characters and their powers.

The thing about Annihilation is that it takes nice, cosmic fun, spins it around, then drops something on you that, even if you aren't familiar with the backstory, you can see the "really really bad news" written all ober it. If you even just know what's going on you can see how this is much more important than any of the petty little squabbles on Earth that Marvel is making all their comics about. And if you've actually been reading the stuff, then you can see that Nova is actually going out of his way to humor Stark throughout this and you have to wonder how he can be so calm and patient when Stark tries to take the high moral ground or be the one "in charge"

You make WWH sound tempting...

AND YOU LEAVE MY NOVA HEARTS ALONE!!!

Less than three.

<3

Internet shorthand for love. Or asshat, if you ask someone else on my friendslist. ;)

And I must've missed them saying Penance is Penance. Last I recalled, Monet and the twins were all themselves.

ah, that makes sense.

interviews and solicits have specifically stated that it's the former generation x character.

After both Monet and the twins were freed, the body still existed and had its own consciousness, we just don't know who or what it is(could even be a memory type consciousness from having three mutants with concept-based powers living in it) even before that, though, Emplate referred to Penance as a husk that he had put Monet in.

I wanted to like New Warriors, but I just haven't been feeling it. There's way too many X-rejects, the artist feels the need to give Jubilee a ginormous boob job, the dialogue had been pretty cringe-worthy, and almost nothing has happened in two issues. I'm giving them at least one more issue, but I'm not optimistic.

I have seen pictures of Jubilee and her chest., They scare me. I have a feeling, though, that there will be fewer x-rejects soon. i have a hunch that they won't all make it out of the first storyarc.
