technical question

I think I've mentioned this before, but for whatever reason, my disc drive won't read anything that isn't already programmed as computer files.  It won't read blank discs(so I can format them to save files-like pics-on to get them off my harddrive) and it won't read DVDs.

Does anyone know if this may just be a default setting that I can change, or know how I(in my EXTREMELY limited computer knowledge) could change this?

help would be much appreciated.

Is your drive for CDs or DVDs? Is it a read/write (R/W) model, or read only? It may be only a CD-RO, in which case you are going to have to get new hardware either to burn discs or play DVDs. A DVD-R/W will do everything you want to do.

If you have an old CD-ROM it won't read DVDs either normal once nor blank ones.
If you have a DVD-Rom check if it is -R or +R for burning. I can't play/burn +R DVDs on my DVD-ROM.
