Stargate: Atlantis Season 1 eps 13-16

You know, normally when people say something has messed up gender politics or gender dynamics, I tend to think they're overreacting.  Here, I wonder why I haven't heard more about it.

1.13: Hot Zone

+I do love Ford VS geeks. I’ll miss him when he’s gone.

+McKay in charge? So far, far less painful and Bad Idea than I’d expect.

+Teyla should wear(and fight in) that outfit more often.

+Ford, of course McKay expects you to go with him when he investigates things. He’s still part weenie.

+Sheppard seems to think "ranking military officer" means "gets to approve everything and nothing happens without permission" or some such. I think he’s confused.

+Uhm...WTF was that with Sheppard countermanding his leader’s orders and using his authority to override hers? Especially when she was freaking RIGHT that he shouldn’t risk himself? Great way to show the populace who’s in charge and how much you support your commander.

+Yes Teyla, call him on undermining Weir’s authority and pointing out he has the same problems he accuses Weir of having. Also, while you’re at it, please point out that he locks Weir into more decisions by not getting approval before agreeing to something than Weir does herself.

+Were I not so pissed by the other stuff, I’d likely be moved by McKay’s little speech when he thinks he’s about to die.

+Yeah, great job of resolving the undermining of authority there. Not.

1.14: Sanctuary

+Were there justice in this world, Teyla would be running this team. As it is, keeping Sheppard from putting his foot too far in his mouth seems to be a full time job.

+All this obsession with different religions can’t end well.

+The ancient reveal was a surprise. No, really. Ok, yeah, I figured it out when she showed up.

1.15: Before I Sleep

+Nice enough little AU/flashback/explanation ep. There was nothing to annoy me, a major plus given a lot of the other eps.

1.16: The Brotherhood

+Ah, the Genii. What joy. But not really.

+Apparently, if you aren’t blonde, McKay doesn’t notice you’re a female.

+Have I mentioned that every once in a while, Ford will do something pretty cool and make me really, really wish they had a clue what to do with him?

+All this having to rise to the moment is going to give Carson a heart attack one of these days.

+No one bothered to frisk Teyla, I see.

+Heeey, they actually mentioned Sora.

+But never showed her, of course.

+OH NOES! The wraith are coming!

We do talk about it. And then everyone who thinks McKay/Sheppard buttsex is what the show is all about tells us to shut the fuck up, sit the fuck down, or stop watching the show. BECAUSE we totally should not expect gender and racial equality from STARGATE. Nope.

Unless there are major character changes along the way, the idea of either of those two noticing anything without a vagina and a respectable chest in a sexual way is just laughable. (But then, that's generally my reaction to one or both males involved in popular fanon slash.) And with McKay, it seems she also needs to be brilliant and probably blonde.

Why should we expect anything vaguely resembling good writing for a female character? They only made one woman the commander, another the leader of her people, and managed to largely get Sam and the occasional other female right most of the time in SG1.
