Oh, Atlantis...

Have started season 2 of Stargate: Atlantis.  This slightly-paraphrased exchange kind of sums up most of the show's issues:

Elizabeth: "We’re so glad you’re here and blowing things up in the safety of your Asgard-protected spaceship. Listen, our city is being overrun by alien vampires trying to eat us, do you think you could spare a couple men to help us with that?"

Captain: "Don’t worry your silly little head about that. Let us men take care of the important stuff, and I’ll send someone to step on that cockroach you’re so scared of later, ok?"

Remind me why I endure this again?  Oh yeah, Teyla.  And Elizabeth when they aren't being ruled by their fear of a woman in charge.

I am sure you will be delighted to know that they never work through those issues. Though a lot of the time I am too blinded by my hatred of McKay to care about other problems the show has.

Sadly, I have no troubles doubting this.

Then, of course, there's what they did with Ford in this episode. Not to mention Sheppard's "let's take Earth's only spaceship and chase after the fleet of alien ships with superior technology." Is it just me, or is that even worse than "oops, I woke up the race of alien vampires!"? (I mean, at least he woke them up on accident with no idea what he was doing...)

Sheppard is remarkably good at not learning anything from any of his poorer choices; of course, the show doesn't really ever see them as wrong because they always pay off by some magic that probably has to do with him being a guy.

An all American, white, military guy, at that.

And the really embarrassing thing is that I have watched every episode of this show. And will probably watch again when it restarts.

HELP ME. PLEASE.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I CANNOT HELP YOU BECAUSE I HAVE FALLEN INTO THE SAME TRAP!

I must send you the Bollywood so that you have something else to watch. Save yourself! It's too late for me!

This show does a great job of taking strong women and making them either helpless or useless, which sticks in my craw. Compare it to a show like Farscape or Burn Notice where you have very strong well used females and SGA looks old fashioned in comparison. Even Supernatural, say waht you will about their misogyny, had Bela and Ruby who needed no assistance to kick ass.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-07-07 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
SGA made the mistake of making its 2 main female characters leaders and putting them in the hands of people who are clearly petrified by women in positions of authority. Conceptually, Elizabeth is the most awesome thing ever, but they're so scared of that that they constantly try to blame her for McKay and Shappard's screwups, and undermine her authority. Teyla fares a little better by being put forward as the best fighter of the group, but still suffers from "OMG! WOMAN! BACKBURNER!"

At least I had years of training from shounen manga giving me great girls, then backburnering them for OMG! GUY FIGHTERS!

hahahahah. Man.

Sigh. I want to take over the world. You got any WMDs?

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Man, that scene was only about 8 minutes in. After sighing, I may or may not have gone "you know, if he used that tone with Sam, the rest of SG-1 would murder him. Or make sure he was exiled to Russia."

Sadly, all I have is my brain and the ability to read fast...

I thought I'd use this icon to remind us all what a real sci fi show is. *g* I find Atlantis just laughably bad.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
The thing about Atlantis is that if they'd just realize women in charge(or with any power) is nothing to be afraid of, and that Sheppard and McKay are ok enough, but don't walk on water and fart unicorns, it'd be a pretty decent show.

[identity profile] nutmeg3.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I hate McKay with the fiery power of a thousand suns. Hate.

He's ok when stupidly crushing on my Sam or being protective of Elizabeth or looking at Teyla like she walks on water because she saved his butt, but that's it.
