comics: Captain America #39-42

Myeh. Was too busy reading and being cold to remember to take notes for each issue as I went.

So, Sharon lost the baby but is back with SHIELD, Bucky and Black Widow are officially A Thing, Dr. Faustus sorta saved the day, Red Skull is trapped in Arnim Zola’s body, and 50s!Cap is running around the US.

Despite the fact that most comic book babies tend to be huge hindrances to storytelling, I’m rather disappointed Sharon lost the baby. Then again, we’ve seen fetuses taken from wombs and artificially incubated how many times? It would fit in nicely with Faustus bringing down Red Skull’s operation and going missing, and explain his making Sharon forget about the baby. That, and I don’t really want him to not have an ulterior motive for all that.

Really, I’m not fond of Sharon not remembering her pregnancy, as that just promises more trauma in the future, but at least Red Skull isn’t in her head, which I was worried about until the last page. The woman needs a break already. Hopefully, Falcon’s “taking care of her” won’t involve Bucky until Bucky learns how to say “Sharon” or “Agent Carter” instead of “Steve’s girl.” (Bucky means well, but that habit needs to go.)

50s!Cap being on the loose and putting his head back together pretty nicely mirrors the earlier situation with Bucky and Cap. Hopefully, it’ll be followed up on, instead of his disappearing into limbo. I’m liking the developing friendship between Bucky and Falcon, but hope the sailing there isn’t too smooth.

I’m getting used to the idea of Bucky and Captain America, but I’d still rather have Bucky trying to earn redemption and make his way independent of the Captain America legacy, and have Steve Rogers back. Also, U.S. Agent needs to make his opinion on Bucky!Cap known.

Captain America is still one of the best Marvel titles published today, but I also would have preferred keeping Steve as Cap and Bucky as the Winter Soldier.

It says a lot that the current main gimmick is something that's the exact opposite of what I want (I kind of think Bucky-as-Cap is a step back fro Bucky in terms of growth) yet I can work up no irritation or annoyance with it.

That's Brubaker for ya.

I think Steve was probably the last true hero of the Marvel U, with everyone else turned to some level of anti-hero. Only way to get a darker, gun-wielding Cap is to replace Steve.

I agree with that 100%! :D It's one of the few mainstream Marvel titles I still read.

Although it has nothing to do with Captain America, are you reading Madame Xanadu? If not, you should be. Probably the best new comic this year.

That's a DC one, right? DC and Marvel both have been so wrapped up in their big "events" that it's been killing my interest in most of their stuff.

It's DC Vertigo, not tied in to any big events. Check these two links before you write it off:

I should have clarified that better. It's not being opposed to checking new things from them out, it's just that I haven't been following news releases much, so I don't know much of what's coming out now.

That's why I was pointing it out. It seems like something you would really like. ;)
