While browsing D.Gray-Man for potential iconmaking, I realized I had forgotten that Allen's morning workout consisted of things like this:
(unspoilery and scaled down, so no cut...click and it gets bigger)

Now, that takes skill. And makes one wonder what another year or two with General Cross would have turned him into...
*wonders if she'll bother to make icons of anyone but Kanda and Lenalee if she does make icons*
ETA: Also while browsing, I am reminded of why I liked Lenalle almost immediately(read: as soon as she did something):

(I wonder if anyone else could do that and live...maybe Komui...)

That's hot. And I'm insanely jealous of his athletic and balancing skills. I'm been doing push-ups for years, and have yet to make them look a.) good or b.) easy. I always look like a girl doing pushups, and not in the hot, Kara Thrace way.

Allen spends so much time being the well intentioned, earnest hero that I forget all his mad survival skills/training. His upbringing was...think Izumi from FMA, only moreso, with a potentially sadistic edge(for his own good), none of the surrogate-mother aspect, about 100 times more survival training, and forcing him to learn to gamble and such to pay their way. Allen is literally incapable of losing-barring being overpowered in a fight-thanks to his upbringing.
He also has a bit of an absurd hero complex, which means Lenalee tends to bash him over the head with a clipboard
(well...yell at him, she doesn't always have the clipboard...) too.

So whoever raised him was an utter bastard, then?

I suspect he raised Allen hard so he could survive, though.
Have you tried D.Gray-Man out? You might like it. It's one of the few shounen where the main female is shown to be as good and useful as the guys in a fight(well, as much as shounen action can do so) as opposed to "ok against normal guys, but outclassed against the hero's opponents." She also doesn't let people get away with much. (See the second scan for how she deals with the resident homicidal sword fantatic picking on the new kid. She's also probably the only person in the world who could get away with that without getting seriously hurt.*

Alive maybe, but probably not unhurt. IMO.
