(no subject)

For better or for worse, based on a few posts on the f-lists today about shipwars in their fandoms, I've created the LJ user interest liking multiple female characters.  (Though, if there's a better version of this, someone tell me.)

ETA:  Related interest that's been around for a bit:  all the fictional women you hate.

FIRST!!

Shipwars? In my fandoms?

I KNOW! I was shocked that I recognized all the fandoms, too! I never would have guessed!

I never would have guessed!

I suppose it was more likely than you thought.

Oh hell yes. I'm so adding this. I think "liking female characters" works too.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but "liking female characters" often ends up "there are 15 male and 15 female characters in this property. I like 14 males and 1 female, and hate the other 15. But it counts! Be impressed! I like 1 girl!"

[identity profile] danyellalot.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. True. =/ God how I wish it wasn't...

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I always have to bit my tongue when I see posts and comments about hating multiple female characters because they suck, then being impressed with themselves for liking one that fits strict guidelines of what's permissable to be a decent female character(without the application of similar guidelines to males.) Never mind that I usually always like the liked girl...

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
That happens to me all the time, usually with Integra Hellsing. I love her very much but I hate to see her trotted out as the one example of a good female character.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
I loved her in the anime. I didn't really plan to read the manga, but a friend made a few comments at A-Kon that made me decide to. (Though...uhm...I haven't yet...)

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The manga is even crazier. I read it for a while then dropped off for some reason, but it's fun.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's usually the case, unless the "crazy" is a pseudonym for "incomprehensible," in which case, it usually ends up the anime.

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-08-17 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No, this is 'batshit insane.' There's an author's note at the end of one volume featuring two of the characters who just got killed that might be the funniest/wrongest thing I read that year.

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
People who say that generally don't claim to like female characters, though. They're usually quite proud of disliking most of them, because, like, they usually totally suck, because they're not just bad characters but Bad Women, and proclaiming this loudly and dismissively is totally the best way to deal with flaws in their writing.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Which just adds to the irritation. Because...uhm...when I listen to rants about how most suck and it's only natural to nitpick their flaws and hold them to stricter standards than the men, and it totally isn't jealousy if being rescued or pursued by the guys is a factor(Why would the guys like her? How dare she get into a bad situation that she probably couldn't help!), I'm not going to feel very inclined to clap when you declare one worthy...

(Mind you, I don't like every female character ever. It's just that if I don't, I probably don't bother to read/watch more. I'm much more likely to stick with something with girls I like and guys I hate than guys I like and girls I hate. Though neither is really very likely.)

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, yeah.

I don't like every (female) character ever either, but...yeah, I often don't quite understand why people will be so eager to praise certain aspects of a fiction (i.e. whatever character they most identify with/crush on) and so thoroughly bash others. They were written by the same person, most of the time. Some might be more inspired or better-constructed than others, sure, but in the end, if a character is badly written enough to make me dislike him or her as a character, there are probably going to be other problems with the work as a whole.

But I've long since recognized that most people don't think of characters the way I do.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean, if the criticism seemed to be based on the same standards being applied regardless of gender or status as love interest, it wouldn't bother me. But it oh-so-clearly rarely is.

*looks up 'female characters' and blinks*

http://community.livejournal.com/girlgerms_news/profile (sadly, it's not been updated in a while, and, MAN, what a concept that, er, might be hard to do, considering the mountain of fic etc out there)

and: http://community.livejournal.com/strongheroines/profile
Which is not in English. *gleeful*

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Man...if that could be pulled off well, it'd be amazing.

i'm so adding that to my interests

WOO! It's up to 4.

*adds interest*

[identity profile] the-sun-is-up.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! *adds* I also reccommend "all the fictional women you hate" for good measure.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
One I have, but it would be good to edit it in...

[identity profile] southerndave.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
May as well be the token bloke with this as an interest... just consider it my way of saying "There will be no Rose / Martha / Donna war here!"...

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
My understanding is that that's a rare stance. (I suspect I'd like all 3.)

[identity profile] southerndave.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's just that people who don't like one of the three feel the need to Shout It From The Rooftops, no matter how much it annoys the rest of us. They're very different characters: Rose was a fairly ordinary shop assistant who's best subject at school was gymnastics (her first appearance involved the department store where she worked being invaded by murderous plastic mannequins); Martha was a medical student (her first appearance involved the hospital she worked at being stolen, Doctor Doom style, and relocated to the Moon) and Donna... well, her first appearance involved being snatched out of her own wedding and dumped in the middle of the Doctor's TARDIS, much to the Doctor's horror.

There have been any number of companions in the show over the almost 45 years it's been in existence, in all its various formats (TV, books, comics and CDs) and very few of them were completely a waste of time. Of those who appeared after the show went colour (many of the first six seasons of black and white episodes no longer exist) the only characters who have an overwhelming majority of fans dislike them are Adric and Mel, and even they have their share of fans.

[identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, totally adding those!

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
They are worthy interests.
