I forgot the whiplash this series gives you.

At this point, if Sevothtarte isn’t Lailah, I’ll be very disappointed. Not that I’m particularly fond of the “woman is supreme misogynist due to past trauma” trope, but it’s the only thing that makes sense. We also know now that Sevy seems to have a fetish for brains in jars. I find that to be quite excellent.

We also have Sara escaping by tricking her maid into taking her place. And the Dramatic Haircut. Those are always fun. And it was very kind of Kaori Yuki to let us know that itty Lil escaped being raped by the guy in the black suit, but I have a feeling that became irrelevant somewhere between Sevy finding her and her ending up in jail.

But I think this volume was mostly an excuse to have Setsuna in various cosplay costumes and running around heaven. I was particularly amused that Zaphikel decided to spare him having to crossdress, and he ended up doing it anyway. Somewhere in there was a speech about how he isn’t Alexiel and can’t live up to the expectations of her followers, but they should do their best. I think it’s the first time I’ve genuinely liked him.

Then Sara and Setsuna were finally reunited after somewhere around eight volumes. I went from “it’s about time” to “ok, time to be separated again, because the book is at its best when Sara is saying ‘screw you’ to people ranting to her about sin and Setsuna is running around Heaven and Hell looking for her.” And then Sevothtarte showed up to make it so. Zaphikel and Sara both dramatically sacrifice themselves to save Setsuna. Sara should be ok, but I fear Sevy will now put Zaphikel’s brain in a jar. WOES!

Mixed in there somewhere, there were random rebels with grenades, bazookas, and sonic screams, plus Kurai’s demons trying to eat Raziel while Kato used Kurai’s head as an armrest, Rosiel being creepy with a random pet, and Kira having A Dramatic And Important Reaction to something I didn’t catch because there was too much going on.

Oh, and Sara figured out Raziel is the child of two angels, so he’s probably Zaphikel and Anael’s kid. And she is apparently being followed around by flocks of flying whales.

I can never decide if I want Kaori Yuki to slow down a bit, or keep it up.
