It's funny what you say about the less-thrilled reviews, because I felt the movie was very clear on Hatter being a supporting character; and I'd been afraid of that very thing. Maybe my bias is showing? The narrative follows Alice; pretty much all the scenes we see Hatter in are where they're/he's pertinent to her.
The end of that review kind of bothered me a little, actually. Alice is essentially kidnapped to Wonderland, leaving behind a mother who loves her and a life she hasn't had a chance to begin to explore. I would have been left with a severely bad taste in my mouth if they had just left her happy in Wonderland. I don't consider 'she liked it in the end!' to be proper explanation for being ripped away from her family and life being presented as a happy ending. And, of course, Alice states that she'll return when she so desires -- on her terms -- satisfying the Wonderland-lover in me.
