Have you seen Branagh's version? (Only avaliable in the US through Illicit Means, sadly.) Of the 3 versions I've consumed, that was probably my favorite Pagagino.
My intro was Cameron Dokey's Sunlight and Shadow which I read a month or so back. The book itself wasn't great (I don't care for Dokey's "I'm so clever" narrative style, and there were too many narrators without individual voices.) but it did some interesting things with the story and mythic elements, and the roles of Pamina and Papagina. Strangely, the bits I liked best in the book were apparently made up by Dokey, while the things I found most fun in the movies weren't in the book.
