I think it was meant to be more for Caroline than for Matt. The writers just, uhm, fail at not prioritizing Damon, Jeremy and Matt over anyone else any time they're on screen, for reasons that utterly mystify me. (TBH, I can't even figure out why he's still around. At this point, he's completely disconnected from basically everything, and is pretty much avoiding everyone when we do see him, aside from the occasional "me me me" speech.)
