Yeeeaaah....this isn't just a show where I go from wanting to make everyone I know watch it to warning everyone I know to never touch it on an episode-by-episode basis, but also on a scene-by-scene basis. But the plot is interesting, I like the mythology (though it's rather awful on a racial front) love the women, and it has probably the only actually decent vampire boyfriend ever. But then...there's Damon, and everything about how he's written and characterized from about the middle of season 1.
Somerhalder used to be pretty decent! Like, his view of Damon and Damon/Elena was very idealized, but also fairly realistic and he wasn't prone to saying things like that. But lately, it's like he went off the deep end. I've seen some people say that maybe TPTB told him not to be critical of Damon and push his angst/the pairing in interviews, but there's a difference between that and saying rape makes your character sympathetic and that it's only natural that women are created to die and add to your character's angst.
