I would actually prefer that, if only for a break from the "the Big Bad Wolf is the hero" trend, but I think the wolf in the road ctualy was the Big Bad Wolf and was keeping Emma there deliberately, and the sheriff is the only real candidate for that right now. I am completely willing to be wrong.
ETA: Though, now that I think of it, Mr. Gold may have gathered his own little Rogues Gallery and may have sent the wolf to keep her there, if he already knew about her before going to Red and Grandma's...
