I actually don't think the Whedon thing is that simple. He gives himself WAY too much credit, but he continues to be demonstrably better about allowing women to be competent and awesome than almost anyone else in popular media. (Not a high bar, I admit.) He does some stuff that is completely messed up, for sure -- say, the entirety of Dollhouse? -- and yet individual characters can be excellent. My hypothesis is, he's against misogyny without understanding kyriarchy AT ALL. It would explain a lot.
