Frenchman's Creek, and anime: Hellsing

meganbmooreWatched the Masterpiece Theater production Frenchman's Creek the other night. It's about and noblewoman who, bored of frivolous society life, goes to her husband's home in Cornwall with their two children and soon learns that the house has become a base for local smugglers and ends up getting involved with them, particularly their leader. Like Clarissa, a lot of it is about a woman of the times dealing with a rough situation, but it's no where near as dark(except for one or two scenes, it's not dark at all, actually) and is much more of a romance. It was pretty good, though I don't think it left an incredibly lasting impression. A month or so from now, I'll likely mosty remember it for having a far kinder ending than I expected.
I also watched the 13 episode anime, Hellsing. It's a straight out horror anime about a vampire named Arucard who works(pretty much against his will) for the Hellsing group, who are devoted to, yup, wiping out vampires and other such monsters from the earth. More specifically, he works(not as against his will as you'd expect, but not necessarily for romantic reasons) for Integra Hellsing. I'm not sure I would have liked it if it were a longer anime, but I quite liked it as a short one. Victoria(Arucard's underling) was a little whiny at times, but it was pretty understandable(didn't quite realize what she was getting herself into when she told Arucard she didn't want to stay dead after he shot her) though I wish the series hard been more through Integra or Arucard's eyes than hers. Integra made for a pretty good strong and icy heroine and Arucard...Arucard makes Demon Eyes Kyo(anime or manga version) look like a nice and fluffy guy. I am glad they included how Arucard and Integra met(even if it was later than what I remember from the bit of the manga I read a few years ago) as it's rather crucial to understanding why the heck he works for her. He's not exactly Chrono, who's a sweet guy no matter what form he is, or Inu Yasha, who's a nice guy under his attitude. It also explains his relationship with Integra, which is possibly the most interesting thing aboutthe series. Anyway, pretty good series, though dark and bloody(and this is from the girl who prefers animes where people die a lot, preferably at the end of sharp, pointy things)
Staying at the parents' this weekend, so I should be watching their copy of Casino Royale tomorrow night.
In unrelated news, I only have 80 or so pages left in George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones, so I should be finishing(and then posting on) it tonight or (more likely) tomorrow.
Her involvement with the smugglers is discovered, of course, and her husband learns that they became lovers. He doesn't want her to stay with him against her will, so he saves her and the smuggler and fixes it so that they can run away together. However, it's not even an option for her to take the children with her-not even a consideration given the life she'd lead with the smuggler, and it never occurs to her or her husband as a possibility-so after seeing the smuggler safely escape, she returns to her husband and children. It's an ending most stories like this aren't brave enough to have, and it worked extremely well, I thought.
