Return of the Condor Heroes: the end

meganbmooreFirst, I found a preview vid of Legend of the Condor Heroes. Hu Ge has proved himself as a wuxia hero already, but itsy bitsy Ariel Lin(and they actually wanted her to lose weight) as Huang Rong is going to be great.
First of all, losing an arm sent Yang Guo up several levels of hot, but getting grey streaks sent him off the charts. Seriously.
Also, I will say this for Fu...in general, she may be a miserable excuse of a person, but she does love her family unconditionally, no matter what's going on or what they do.
This is, unquestionably, the most beautiful wuxia series I've seen, but I'm not sure it's my favorite. Aside from 2 brats(one of whom got over it in the first 3 episodes and grew up, the other who never did) it's all great. However, as I've read, most of the female characters, with the exception of Huang Rong, really are mostly foils for the men. Yes, they kick serious butt, but they also still need rescuing despite that, and are largely defined by their relationship to YG. Xiao Long Nu is a good heroine, and she's far, far from a weak character, but she's also a passive character...the only time she really takes the initiative when it doesn't involve YG's safety is when she gets her revenge after learning she was raped...even when she takes Xiang to safety, she does it with the idea of using her to get the antidote for YG. Beyond that, she largely follows YG's lead. Now, she's a GOOD foil and is exactly what he needs to keep his wildness in check and simultaneously give him the support he needs, but she is largely a foil. The other women are there largely to emphasize his love for XLN, and to get rescued so he'll look more heroic. Which isn't to say that that I didn't like them...except for the brat and the witch in Heartless Vale(even Li Mo Chou is rather likable in her way) they're all very likable.
The only really exception is Huang Rong, who, aside from when she's pregnant(and hey, a few days before giving birth, she kicked the butt of the guy giving all the men trouble and then mentioned how useless she was these days because she's pregnant) is the one saving everyone's butts, even YG's, though he didn't always realize or appreciate it. If she wanted to, that woman would rule the world.
That said, it really is an excellent series on pretty much all levels(hey, there's a reason they remake it every few years...)
