Yoshitsune TPTB:  "Dear Takizawa Hideaki fangirls.  We apologize that Takki was not around between the first 5 minutes of ep 1 and the last minute of ep 3.  As compensation, that minute will feature Takki wet and shirtless in the river."

This was, seriously, my only thought during that scene(I like Takki and all, but he's more the reason certain people wanted me to watch Yoshitsune than why I wanted to watch.)

But who cares if there's no Takki, for a while, we get Widdle Guy.  Now, when we saw young Yang Guo in Return of the Condor Heroes, he was an obnoxious little brat and 3 eps less of him would have been lovely.  In contrast, Yoshitsune(who's going through quite a few names...he was born Ushikawa and now goes by Shanao, and I think he gets at least one more before being called Yoshitsune) was an adorable little baby and then Widdle Guy(I am calling him Widdle Guy to ensure there is no chance of pervy minds connecting his little self to Takki and Takki fanservice.)  Widdle Guy is an absolute darling and I wanted to hug him every five minutes.  Sadly, he's gone already.  He also got sent off to live in a temple with monks, but despite a little rebellion, was much better behaved about it.

Unlike Musashi, the only other Taiga drama I've seen(and my favorite dorama)  I actually only know a very little bit about Minamoto no Yoshitsune.  I'll likely investigate after I finish the series.  Yoshitsune's father, Minamoto no Yoshitomo, lost a war to Lord Kiyomori and died.  Traditionally, his sons would be executed to make sure they didn't grow up to become vengeance driven samurai, but every woman in the world ganged up on him to spare Yoshitomo's sons (and, despite it being the smart move, he wasn't overly keen on the idea anyway)so he had the three older sons sent to separate buddhist temples to become monks and allowed the infant Yoshitsune to stay with his mother, Tokiwa.  Eventually, though, Widdle Guy got sent to the temple when he started to be old enough for any of Yoshitomo's followers who found him to try to turn him to their side.

While Musashi approached it's lead and story from the perspective of a historical figure, Yoshitsune is approaching it from more or a folk hero/legend standpoint, and so far it works well.  My favorite folk hero-type moment so far is when Widdle Guy saves a little girl from a run away horse, then his terrified little will and the horse's clash and he wins.  I kid you not.  Oh, and he jumps fully clothed off a cliff into a river and emerges as shirtless Takki.

(No, I'm not shamelessly using any Takki crushes against the flist here at all)

Also?  It sucks to be Tokiwa.  She had her 2 oldest sons taken from her(and her stepson...poor kid was trying so hard to be a proper samurai once he was taken captive after his father's death, but he was just a kid) and then less than 10 years later, had her youngest son and infant daughter taken from her.  Oh, and the daughter will be raised by a woman who hates Tokiwa's guts.

That said, hopefully Yoshitsune will understand that you do not mess with or challenge samurai women better than Widdle Guy did.  They may look all soft and pretty and meek and elegant, both those women are solid steel.  Especially the ones who trek across the country through enemy territory with 2 small boys and an infant in tow and then confront the man who killed their husband to beg him to spare the lives of their sons.

ETA: And ep 4 starts w/ Yoshitsune practicing his swordsmanship shirtless in the woods.  No, they aren't being shameless about their fanservice or anything...  (also?  Despite growing up in the temple, he is somehow exempt fron the hairstyle rules...guess it pays to be a JE idol...)

ETA 2:  Ha ha...he just saved a random girl in the streets from thugs...bet its the same girl Widdle guy saved from the horse.  Especially since she sent him hero worship eyes before running off.

ETA 3: Random girl is played by Ueta Aya, as I am informed they are not OTP and she is staring worshipfully at his back and saying his name in a breathy voice, I shall assume she is either a first love who dies tragically, an OTP interferer or, most likely, the poor girl to love him from afar for most of the series...who will likely die tragically.  What shall it be...

ETA 4:  Such beautiful scenery(I'm referring to the mountains and rocks and river and buildings, BTW)  I miss Widdle Guy, though....wish we could have flashbacks to Widdle Guy w/ new footage.

ETA 5:  Must DL ep 4 to take caps of Takki reading for iconning.

ETA 6:  WOOT! Random ninjas are attacking him in the woods so we  know he can use that sword against something besides tree trunks and empty air because Mystic Mountain Hermit (yeah, clueless about his name) wants to test him.  This, incidentally, is afterthe 3rd shirtless Takki scene in about 35 minutes of footage...I am seriously considering counting the shirtless Takki scenes just for the fun of it.

ETA 7: There's 4...

ETA 8: So, I've noticed that these eps are actually fairly short.  By the time I FF through the recap and the credits play(BTW, it had to so better tell me why at least half of the credits are of a horse running through water and fog...) It's almost 5 minutes in, and the previews start right at 40 minutes...I guess Takki didn't really have time or something.  If I weren't stopping every few minutes to add to the post, I'f likely at least finish ep 6 tonight....

ETA 9:   Oooo... [personal profile] dangermousie, it's the scene you posted to your LJ a while back.

You know, the "legend" approach as opposed to "history" is resulting in something of a wuxia feel...kinda a samurai/wuxia hybrid, rather like Satomi Hakkenden(except, you know bigger budget and almost 10 ten  times as long.)  Just an observation.

And now, bed.
