Yeah, that's why I could never get into those shows...I think I watched 5 eps straight of CSI once and all I knew about the characters were their names, and that the show thought it was very clever.
Bones is more about 2 really different brothers and their dad, and one brother is a mathematical genius and the other is an FBI agent, so they get involved in a lot of crimes. Bones is about a bunch of odd but lovable scientists who sometimes work with this 90% normal guy who's half convinced they're all aliens, but that guy happens to be an FBI agent, so they help solve a lot of crimes.
While both shows focus on what the characters do for a living, it's portrayed as being what the characters do, as opposed to the characters just being there to voice out what's going on.
