Superman Returns(possible spoilers)
Jul. 5th, 2006 11:19 pmSaw it, liked it. Would place it about even with "Batman Begins," which I liked better than the first 2 X-Men movies. Take that as you will.
Most of what I'd say has been said. Routh was surprisingly good, Bosworth was acceptable, but not quite Teri Hatcher, who was clearly her main influence. Loved Perry, wasn't big on Jimmy. Spacey's Lex was a good tribute to Hackman, though an odd departure from Rosenbaum's Lex, who I'm inordinately fond of.
I was surprisingly happy with Marsden's character. I wasn't surprised that I liked him, I was surprised that they didn't choose an annoyed and stereotyped direction for him. Lois, it seems, really only falls for the best guys. In the end, while she's not where she belongs permanently, she's in the best place for her for the time being. In some ways, though I know others will disagree with me, I think Richard was a good part of what made the movie work, because he showed that Lois wasn't just putting on a show of moving on with her life. While she still loves Superman, she also loves Richard, and while he may not be her destiny, he is a central point in her life, and likely the best thing in it. He, meanwhile, clearly gets that while she loivedshim, she's not over Superman, and I think he loves her enough to let her make her choice. I tend to think that he's never asked and never been told who Jason's father is, but he knows, and doesn't care because he loves both of them.
My only real complaint, I think, was that there needed to be a payoff for Lois/Superman, and there wasn't. Granted, most forms of payoff would have cheapened what I was just babbling about, but a Superman movie where the First Couple of Comics is featured prominently needs a payoff of some sort for them.
