meganbmoore: (fables-rose)
My October comics came today and I think I have finally refound my inner comic geek, after DC and Marvel Events chased it into dormancy.  I realized I have multiple isues of Usagi Yojimbo, Blade of the Immortal, Fables, Castle Waiting, Jack of Fables, Captain America(still so odd to have that book high on my list...) and Shadowpact waiting for me.  And a new Cable & Deadpool.  Others, too, but those are the important ones.  Plus, the events going on in my comics reading now(I am pretending Death of the New Gods doesn't exist and is just a bad dream) are First Born and Annihilation, both of which make me giddy.  Hrm...I also have a new Wonder Woman...I shall read it first as I must endure for character loyalty.

I am also in the last dic of s4 of Stargate.  I loved Carter Junior.  Is she coming back?

Sadly for some, happily for others, I have no more Stargate after s4 until 5+ becomes available to me for cheap.  I think I shall binge more on wuxia after this.

ETA: My lunch smells so good and it's making me hungry but it's not ready yet...

ETA 2:  YAY! robot!SG-1 ha returned.  Sadly, robot!Teal'c lacks the extreme stoicim of the original...and seems to have a thing for robot!Carter.  *brain attempts to process that*

ETA 3:  *sniffle*  poor, poor robot!SG-1...

So, I have seriously mixed feelings about this one.  Somehow, I think I should be madly in love with it, but I'm not.  Part of it, I'm sure, is because I don't trust Clamp to not screw me over in the end.  Like with Wish and Chobits.  I mean really, WTF were those endings anyway?

xXxHolic is about a young man named Watanuki who sees spirits.  Against his will he 's dragged into the shop of Yuko, the time witch, who grants favors and wishes in exchange for equal payment.  Yuko tells him she can free him from seeing spirits, once he's done enough manual labor around hershop to pay for it.  Think of indentured servitude.  On the whole, it makes me think about a more insane Pet Shop of Horrors.

I didn't have to force myself to finish, but I was left a bit...disgruntled.  Mostly, I alternated between general amusement and annoyance, with the occassional "WTF?"  thrown in.  But...not nearly as much amusement or WTF? as I'm supposed to have.  Part of it is that while the concept is fun and done entertainingly, the characters don't grab me.  I'm sure that later on, I'll find Yuko utterly amazing and be very fond of Watanuki, but righ now, Yuko's overwhelming overbearingness is more of the annoying variety and Watanuki is just kinda...there.

But despite my disgruntlement, I want to continue.

Fans need to come forth and tell me of the many wondrous things I'm told are coming later on to help me muster through until I'm hooked.

ETA:  I forgot the major drawback:  Those "cute" kids that work  for Yuko/live with her/whatever annoy the heck out of me and I want to kick them through the wall.  Convince me that they get less annoying and/or there's a reason for it.

My Top Cow comics had an ad for the Witchblade anime.  The heroine was grabbing her breast and the flesh was kinda oozing out between her fingers.  It caused me much sorrow and squicky and made me glad for the first time that the anime and manga decided to not use the Witchblade-proper characters.  I feel that alone tops the entirety of Michael Turner's run in the gratuity department.  Heck, the entire 111 issues of the series.

I think I'm about to embark on a wuxia binge(sure, I only have 3 series waiting, but I could probably make that last a month)  As several people have friended me since I last watched wuxia(not that it's been that long) and some probably didn't know what I was talking about when I was posting, I have slapped together a wuxia guide-type post.

It ended up rather longer than planned, but is still much shorter than it could be.

Here is wikipedia's entry on wuxia.

[personal profile] meganbmoore's much less informative but more succinct description:  Wuxia are coming of age adventure stories set in ancient and medieval China.  The heroes are (in my experience) usually young men raised in near or total seclusion, or who led simpler lives before starting on their adventures.  Most are motivated either by a need to fulfill a promise to a parent or master, or by revenge(or both.)  Though they don't always start out that way, they usually end up being one of the greatest fighter's of their time.  Romance always plays some role, but with varying importance to the plot.  Sometimes it will be a main focus, others, a more background thing.  Most heroes, though, have several girls in love with them throughout the series.  Some will love more than one girl(usually in succession, not simultaneously) and others (the good ones) will only love one girl throughout.  If a series has 2 major heroes, there will usually be at least one of each kind. Some wuxia are straight up fantasy, and others historical dramas.  Most, however, still have a touch of the fantastic, and all, even the most strictly historical, involve fantastical acrobatics, including impressive aerial feats(called "wire-fu.")

I'm not going to get into wuxia movies(except to say that Hero seems to be the most popular but, IMO, none come close to matching up to Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon) but most that have been released in the US in recent years-Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, etc.-are of the straight historical drama with amazing acrobatics variety.
