anime: Madlax eps 1-4

*wikipedia's Madlax page looks to be spoilerific, so you don't get proper country names, sorry*

Madlax is a renown mercenary in a country whose name I can't begin to spell or pronounce that seems to be a cross between a South American and European country that's in a civil war.  She's a hopeless romantic who somehow manages to combine bright and cheerful with OMG TEH ANGST!!!  She also likes to wear evening gowns to confrontations, both verbal and physical, even if it means standing in trees while wearing it.  I haven't quite figured that out yet, but the wardrobe choice doesn't to really hold her back.

Margaret is a school girl in a more peaceful European country.  She comes from a filthy rich family and is sweet but clumsy, though not annoyingly so.  While Madlax is the main force in her storyline, Margaret is mostly a bystander in hers, as the people around her seem to be caught up in the slowly developing bigger picture, much of which seems to circle around Madlax's country.

Both girls seem to have amnesia, acquired at about the same time, though while Margaret knows who she is, Madlax doesn't.  Margaret is perfectly likable, but Madlax is definitely the more dynamic personality of the two.  I have to say, if Margaret's storyline didn't fairly regularly make referrences to the current events in Madlax's, I'd posit the theory that Margaret is actually Madlax at a younger age, as the two storylines are mostly independent of each other, and the two characters don't seem to know each other, or have anything tying them together yet.

I have no idea where it's going, but I like it.

Thank goodness for friends...

Were I to stumble across Deborah Chester's The Pearls at the bookstore on my lonesome, I might be tempted to purchase it for thi line on the back cover alone:

And when what she sees moves her to tears, those tears are transformed into flawless pearls.

Why?  Because if this were a manga, there's would be a scenario like this:

Heroine:  "This is so sad...

*cries*

*tears turn into pearls that bounce around on the ground*

*masses pounce on the free pearls as heroine turns into a confused and angry chibi*

Heroine:  HEY!  A little respect!

*sees Love Interest and Loyal Followers also grabbing pearls*

Heroine:  You too?

*males look mildly guilty with sweatdrops*

* Heroine cries Single Emo Manga Tear of Sorrow*

I am, however, saved from this fate because [personal profile] telophaseis reading it for the same reasons I would have.

You know, I've looked at and almost bought Chester's books a few times.  But they sound like books that have elements of things I really like combined with tropes and approaches I don't, and I've never really seen anyone post nice things on them, and the good reviews I have seen mostly talk about things I don't really look or care for when it comes to fantasy.  (Look, I love romance in my fantasy most of the time, even when I don't care about the actual romance, as long as it doesn't annoy me, but I don't read it for schmoopy romance...I have romance novels not pretending to be anything else when I want that!)

Also, be sure to follow her link to the cover.  That is some very interesting positioning if Heroine turns around.

Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane

I read Diane Duane’s So You Want to Be a Wizard? about two years ago and loved it. Granted, I was possibly at least partly seduced by the library and how much books factored into the plot and how books and reading were important. I’m the sort of person who pulls out Mirrormask just to rewatch the part about the library, after all.

Deep Wizardry takes place sometime after SYWTBAW?, with Kit and Nita at the beach for summer vacation with Nita’s family when another wizard asks for help. Normally, the adult wizards in charge of Kit and Nita would take care of it, but they’re also on vacation, and Kit and Nita are the only ones available. The catch? The other wizard is a whale, and to help the wizard, Kit and Nita have to become sea animals themselves so they can help fill out a circle needed to complete an underwater ritual.

You know, I love-and I do mean love-sea lore, but I’m not really big on narratives that emphasize environmental issues and “nature good, humans bad,” and DW treads dangerously close to that sometimes. As a result, I didn’t enjoy the underwater plot as much as I would have otherwise.

I did, however, like Kit and Nita dealing with trying to keep their being wizards from her parents, and how that played out. I don’t really like plots that revolve around kids misbehaving and sneaking around, so I was somewhat irritated by that early on, but I did like how they didn’t get away with it, and that her parents reacted fairly realistically. I’m also very glad her parents weren’t remotely villified. Too much fiction seems to use the villification of authority as a shortcut to justify the behavior of the leads, and that can get tiring, so it’s nice to have that deliberately avoided.

While I didn’t like it as much as SYWTBAW?, I did like DW, and need to figure out what I did with the third book in the series.

As I haven't seen anyone else posting on it yet...

George R.R. Martin's A Dance With Dragons will be out 9/30.

ETA:  Amazon, why did you remove the original listing I was watching and replace it?  IT CREATD UNFAIR EXPECTATIONS!

Possibly more importantly, the third Eragon book will be out 9/20.

Please, I beg of you DO NOT LET ME READ IT!!!  Have I not "taken one for the team" enough with the first 2?  Was not my suffering enough to make me appreciate almost every other fantasy ever written?  In no universe will a supporting character the author doesn't even realize is the only remotely likable charcter in the whole thing be worth the trauma!

(no subject)

Ok, who wants to blame LJ going down for an hour on [profile] livelongnmarry's bidding almost being over?

Unless I'm the only one it went down for...

ETA:  And as soon as I hit "post," comment notices start popping up on auctions I already gave up on...
