Mar. 3rd, 2009 11:03 amCurrently circulating my corner of the blogosphere to Peter David (PAD) getting
scans_daily shut down for posting scans of one of his comics. His explanation is here(ETA: Wrong link. Was sent that and an F_S secret someone sent me at the same time and saved the wrong one. Maybe someone will comment with his comments.), and one of the mods explains things here. It has, naturally made it to Fandom Wank.
I don't know if an entire issue was posted as he said, as there is a rule on the community about not having more than half an issue of any comic posted to the community, even in separate posts, and I've seen the rule referred to quite a bit. OTOH, I'm told
scans_daily had a tendency to bash PAD and his comics* when he commented in posts (I haven't seen it, as I don't often follow the discussions, so I'm going by secondhand information), so I probably wouldn't be surprised if someone did break the rule. It did, however, regularly serve as free (and supposedly successful) advertisement for various comics and manga, and seems to have been one of the the most popular places online for female comic book fans to hang out.
Interesting situation, and I think there's a lot of overreaction going on (that is, I don't think PAD is the spawn of the devil over it, but I also doubt vendetta or personal vengeance can be ruled out on his side), but I think I'm largely neutral on it. Then again, I'm the one who wouldn't shed a tear if fantranslations of every licensed anime and manga were to suddenly disappear from the internet.
Somehow, though it's completely obscured this blogpost of PAD's, which starts saying that people aren't afraid of facing or discussing race because of Obama's election and how it represents progress, and ends up being about how whites live in fear of, and are oppressed by, blacks. The comments, naturally, are amazingly painful to read.
Am I the only one who's really tired of long, careful explanations of how people and things they enjoy can't possibly be racist or sexist, other people are just oversensitive? And oppressive meanies. Not to mention how any criticism is obviously an unfounded attack and bashing.
*As far as my opinion of his work goes: I read the first 25~ issues of his Captain Marvel series. I picked it up for the hedonistic Genis Vel who was living in his perfect father's footsteps that I'd read about before, only to find him a normal stick-in-the-mud space hero. The book was good, but it wasn't about him, but was actually abour Rick Jones, eternal sidekick, and injokes for PAD's Hulk fans. I didn't care about either when I started, and sidn't care about them when I quit. I've read the first three trades of his current X-Factor run and have the fourth one waiting for me. I like them a good bit, but don't really care about Jamie Madrox being a Special Special Snowflake, and am more reading for the supporting cast.
