Random icon thinkiness.
Jul. 12th, 2009 12:57 amEvery once in a while, I tend to go through my icons and count up characters/genders/fandoms. And then do navel gazing about icons. Assume numbers can be off by one or two icons. This is also the icons I have uploaded to Livejournal. I have the same icons and 5 more at Dreamwidth This time, I have:
Female only: 68 (1 is actually a genderless parasitic alien overlord who self-identifies as male but doesn't seem to mind being in a female body. Adjust the numbers as you will.)
Male only: 8
Male and Female: 36
Non-person/character: 3
Character Overlap: 27 (28 if you want to count TRC and CCS Syaoran and Sakura, but as far as I know, they're still separate characters)
Specific fandoms I have more than 1 icon for:
Angel Sanctuary: 3
Avatar: 2
Blade of the Immortal: 3
Bleach: 3
Claymore: 6
Dollhouse: 2
Farscape: 3
Fullmetal Alchemist: 3
The Inside: 2
Kaze Hikaru: 2
Princess Tutu: 3
RG Veda: 2
Samurai Deeper Kyo: 2
Skip-Beat: 2
Stargate: SG-1/Stargate: Atlantis: 4
Trick: 3
Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle: 3
Twelve Kingdoms: 2
Wallflower: 3
Wonder Woman: 2
xxxHolic: 2
If you've been at reading this journal for a week, you know I have a female character bias. I'm less likely to get into something if it has no female characters, and i find it difficult to like something where I dislike the female characters. Therefore, if I like something, it probably has at least one female character I like. Usually more.
That said, 12 are nonfandom (unless you include that 4 are so are covers of non-series books): all 3 non-person/character icons (2 are text, 1 is my parents' cat) 1 male only, and 8 female only. When I pick out/make icons, I tend to approach them in 1 of two ways. The first is aesthetics. Very often, what determines if I save an icon/make an icon/upload an icon is that the image makes me go "Pretty!" The second is if the image either comes with text I like, or (more often) strikes me as something that would work with a certain text, or seems to be an image that would be good for certain uses.
In addition, the "multiple icons for a fandom" breakdown doesn't really give a representation of how much I LIKE the fandoms. I have no icons of Basara (no idea howthat happened, I used to!) and only 1 each of Remington Steele and Damo, and those three rank above everything I do have multiple icons of except for Blade of the Immortal. I have 3 SGA icons and 1 Supernatural and two Dollhouse icons a and those aren't shows I actually like. Supernatural and SGA icons are there because of (1) fondness for the characters, (2) a (totally pointless, because what do they care?) "stuff you" to how the canons treat women. And the fandoms. The Dollhouse ones are primarily thoughts in my head when the specific scenes aired. I have a Battlestar Galactica icon and I've seen the miniseries and I think 4 episodes of the show and I can't be called a fan by any interpretation of the word that I know of. I have the icon because I was seduced into watching by the promise of Snarky Evil Robot Xena, and that deserved an icon.
Anyway, how people use icons always interests me. Some people have 2-3 icons and that's it and that's all they want or need, some have icons mostly of their favorite celebrities, some from a few main fandoms, some with a specific theme, some try to represent as many fandoms as possible, some focus on humor/crack icons, some expressive icons, etc. It's also interesting how people come to associate certain images with certain people. Like, I'm pretty sure that anyone who saw my default icon (or even a similar one, as it isn't anything more than a resized and slightly adjusted crop) would automatically assume it was me. (actually, I think most of the icons people have mentioned associating me with are ones that I made but never posted to any communities, though any icon I make and put online somehow is up for grabs except the ones made for specific people and my parents' cat.) Which, I think, is why a lot of people try to use icons they don't see anyone else using.
