On a random rewatch of Legally Blonde, i have realized that Elle's ex-boyfriend, he of the smarmy smile and tons of hair gel, is played by Matt Davis, aka, Alaric Saltzmann in The Vampire Diaries.

Suddenly, it makes sense  that Alaric's descent into abject loserdom in the second half of season 2 was disappointing, but not surprising.
