cmovie: Picture of A Nymph
Oct. 13th, 2011 08:28 pmWhich I have also seen as Portrait of A Nymph, and in which the titular nymph is a ghost. Played by Joey Wong, frequently looking coy.
This movie features a wuxia battle between a dozen or so wedding coaches. Complete with flips, sound effects, and lightning.
I feel that is all some people need to know.
Anyway, Joey Wong plays a bride who is killed on the way to her wedding by "King Ghost" who is a female ghost who collects dead brides. As one does.
She also spends a lot of time lolling around on top of a red umbrella, and has a squad of sidekicks with red umbrellas and high pitched cackles.
At some point, Joey Wong's maid dies and is happy because then they're reunited as ghosts. I can't remember what actually happened to her in the end, and admit to getting some of the non-Joey Wong and non-King Ghost ghost ladies mixed up.
Then there’s the scholar who is apparently a ghost magnet because he spends at least half the movie getting saved from ghosts. He first gets rescued by the adopted son of a demon hating priest (who gets the oddest tasks-like vows of silence-except-for-grunting and making 1365 paper cranes-and was found floating down the river in a basket) who then spends the movie rescuing the scholar when not pining over his own ghostly love. The scholar, naturally, falls in doomed love with Joey Wong. And then she moves into a picture of her that he paints.
There's lots of men running from demons through the forests and lots of lady ghosts flitting around in alternate stages of tragically, seductively, mischievously and evilly. Sometimes, they stroke each other's hair while discussing their devotion to one another and/or talk about their harems of other lady ghosts. When they aren't fighting ghost-hating priests.
And it is very very very pretty while doing all that. (And maybe hoping you won't draw too many comparisons to A Chinese Ghost Story.)
