Pillars of the Earth
Dec. 31st, 2011 10:38 pmI watched the first episode of this miniseries while the show was airing and, while I thought it was interesting and liked Aliana and Ellen a lot, I hated pretty much every man but Philip, the priest, and kind of forgot to get bac to it. I watched the whole thing this weekend and...had kind of the save reaction, though some of the men grew on me. (Specifically Richard, Jack and Tom though it kind of came and went with all of them at times.)
I found the actual construction of the cathedral interesting viewing but was very very tired of the feud between the priory and the Hamleighs by the halfway mark, and I hated almost every narrative choice involving the Hamleighs (there a line between twisted villains/families and and mistaking sadistic mustache twirling and ickiness for being "dark" and the show crossed that and never looked back starting with the scene where Regan basically makes sure William was the good little rapist she tried to raise him to be in the second episode) that wasn't about Aliana and Richard* wanting to dance on their graves. I liked the war parts too, but I think it needed to have a better balance of attention regarding Stephen and Maud to really work for me.
But I was mostly watching for Aliana and Ellen's parts throughout.
But the main purpose of this post is to ask if anyone knows what happened to William's wife at the end? I kept watching to see if they said what happened to her after Shiring was taken, but she just disappeared. I guess she could have gone back to her family, but they seem to have pretty much sold her off and washed their hands of her altogether when she married William. Is her fate covered in the book?
*Speaking of Richard, the first couple episodes had me a bit concerned about Sam Caflin's role in Snow White and the Huntsman, but I was looking forward to seeing him there by the end. Hopefully he doesn't have anything like the hair he had in the last episode in SWATH, though, because he could not pull that hair off. mind you, that wasn't exactly the world's greatest wig to start with...
