Apr. 14th, 2012 01:44 pmIf you watch enough of the US releases of UK shows on DVD, you get used to the collages of 5 second clips from various shows. Some of these sets manage to make good shows look incredibly dull, but there's one bit in these that I love.
One clip is of Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren saying "Don't call me 'Mum', I'm not the bloody queen." (I'm actually not sure if it's "Mum" or "ma'am" but I think "Mum.") This is followed by a Foyle's War clip with Michael Kitchen saying "Well unfortunately, the facts would suggest otherwise."
I can never not nod along with him.
(Actually, I think this set is the only one that actually makes all the shows look entertaining.)
ETA: I know that what Americans hear as "Mum" is "Ma'am," but there's such a variety of English accents (even if Hollywood thinks there's only 1 kind of English accent) that I've heard it pronounced both ways by British actors, plus hybrids.
