Telenovela 1.1-1.3
Dec. 8th, 2015 10:50 pmTelenovela is a new sitcom starring Eva Longoria as Ana, the beloved star of a long running telenovela, and focuses on the lives and antics of the cast and crew of the telenovela. The plot kicks off when the new network president hires her ex-husband to play a potential new love interest for her character, which she loudly objects to. Ana does not speak much Spanish, despite the fact that the scripts and all of her dialogue for the show-within-the-show are in Spanish, which is an ongoing joke in the show that serves as a commentary on the different ways to be Latinx in Hollywood. The show is also set in Miami, which means it really, REALLY needs to have a crossover with Jane the Virgin.
It's loosely based on/inspired by/whatever-they-call-it-these-days Soapdish, which is amazingly obvious in the first episode even if you knew nothing about the show going in. It's been a while since I rewatched Soapdish, but I'm pretty sure some of Ana's dresses are inspired by Celeste's, and the sets for the shows within the show look a lot like the sets for the show within the show in Soapdish. There's no secret baby plot (though there was a reference to it), and hopefully there won't be any transphobic dramatic climaxes. It's a parody of both sitcoms and telenovelas, but is too cute and sweet to provide the biting commentary it tries for. I have no clue what the show within the show is supposed to be about except that it involves and evil bald man with a mustache trying to steal the heroine's vineyard, the heroine doing a lot of slap-slap-kiss with a local police officer, and dramatic overuse of a wind machine.
It's not really much like Jane the Virgin or Devious Maids, despite obvious similarities, and because of it's nature, it tends to be heavily reliant on tropes, but I thought it was genuinely funny, and without being mean or gross about it like so many "comedies," and the cast and characters are good. It also, so far, refrains from mocking women for their sexuality in situations where they would usually be punished for it.
The first 2 episodes aired this week and the third is available online. I watched all 3 episodes in one sitting, which probably means no new episode for me next week.
