I share most of your Defiance thoughts (can't recall how many times I thought 'So they're supposed to be Carter+Zoe 2.0?' throughout the pilot)
They even have the deputy being put on duty to watch the surly daughter, and bonding with her. (Though these two aren't going to become surrogate sisters.)
I thought about that too re: Rachel taking Aaron, as far as that being the official reason, except it seems he only hear about the nanites 5 minutes ago? The part of 1.13 actually confused me a bit, because everything else in the episode seems to be set a least several weeks later (Tom being frustrated at constantly being overlooked for missions, Miles and Jim training the recruits, Jason being with the rebels long enough to get to request what missions he goes on, and their faction of the rebels, at least, seems to have been reorganized to follow more military procedures) but with Rachel and Aaron, it's like they were picking up a conversation from the night before. Unless he gave her a blank look and she miraculously found a blank spiral and filled it out with details for him.
