I went in expecting a lot of changes and, while a few were jarring, I've mostly been ok as long as i view it as a separate entity.
I honestly think that Harry is the first time Bob has actually CARED about anyone since Winifred, and you just wanted to huge both him and Harry through the flashbacks. And most of the present, too.
I figured they brought in Tara because, as Harry put it(though not directly) the women were just a way to feel something besides the pain and hence, the women. Elaine wouldn't have fit in with that, as she'd be more angst/connection to the past as opposed to escape.
I think TV Harry gets more action because TPTB realize that putting Paul Blackthorn on screen then telling us he never gets any, especially when he's playing the angst ridden rogueish charmer, is silly. So instead of perpetually frustrated Harry we get string of meaningless women Harry. He doesn't really seem to have luck with them beyond bed, though, and seems miserable enough, so i view it rather like the storefront and the basement or the jeep and the bug...very different mechanics, but it gets the same point across.
