Having now seen the movie you'll appreciate the anime version of Kikuchiyo that much more, he steals the show for most of the anime too, and he gets his own fan squad :b
Some of the mecha scenes get a bit over the top (including one of the samurai stopping a bullet more than three times his size... with a sword), but the mecha are downplayed in favor of the more human elements more often than not. The mecha are mostly there to just show how cool the samurai are, so they're largely forgivable.
