To be honest, Dark Lover is my least favorite of the series and I had much the same reaction you did. ("What the hell? Why is everyone raving about this series?") I honestly don't know if I liked that book much either. And then I read the next one (Lover Eternal) and while I wasn't quite sold on that one either, it had a huge subplot about Zsadist and his heroine and I was doomed!
Oh, and it introduced John Matthew and again, doomed!
