I think Zel does have human needs, he's just big into the "I'm so cool you'll never see me sweat" persona. He tries so hard to be unruffled by anything which is why he works great in the group (as they spend much of their time ruffling him) and I personally think he works great with Amelia for that reason. Who else is going to keep her and her father out of trouble and will only facepalm at their "FOR GREAT JUSTICE!" antics?
And aside from physical issues, I actually think Amelia likes Zel's chimera looks (she said as much), so if they figure out a way around the "hair made of razors and skin made of granite" issue, I think she wouldn't mind him staying a chimera.
