Last Exile eps 13-17 and pesky bases

meganbmooreOk, what's with Claus suddenly getting all the girls? I mean, seriously? First Alister chooses him over Tatiana. Then, after they get stranded in the desert together, Tatiana wanders around the ship, clutching his work clothes and mooning over him. Then Sophia randomly kisses him (WTF?????????) Lavie is also suddenly acting like a jealous girlfriend. This last one actually weirded me out, as until then, I would have assumed they were siblings if I hadn't been told otherwise.
Perhaps the anime is going the "if all the girls like him, he HAS to be interesting" route.
Claus and Lavie kiddie flashbacks were very, very cute. Even if Lavie with long hair is mildly disconcerting. We also get a nice chunk of Alex's angst explained. It is suitably impressive.
Now, let's talk Sophia for a moment. First, she's off to be queen of the world or some such. She can only do an infinitely better job of it than her father. She also gets to wear pretty clothes and get rescued by Vincent, so it can't be all bad. However, her male radar might want a little fine tuning. I'll ignore that Claus kissing thing as an unfortunate side affect of too much time drowning in Alex's angst. I understand why a girl needs a break at that.
But, let's look at Alex and Vincent. Now, I quite like Alex...interesting guy, excellent at the brooding and angsting and cape tossing. Good leader, probably a pretty good friend, all nice and driven and everything. Also has enough angst to make me happy the boundaries of reality and fiction separate us. (He'd fit in amazingly well in Saiyuki.) Also likes to fling his angst at you and is so busy angsting over you leaving him to become queen that he doesn't even see you off. Then you have Vincent, who is all nice and bright and swashbuckling and coffee addicted. Not only does Alex's angst bounce right off him(quite admirable in and of itself), but he likes to do things like rescue you from assassins Errol Flynn style, rally entire fleets around you, and announce to everyone that you're the empress and make them bow down to you. Also all chivalrous and courteous. Plus, he lets you sit in the captain's chair. Does Alex ever do that? I'm also sure he would have seen you off and tried to not look angsty as you left if you left him to become empress.
(Note: Vincent to Sophia falls into the "things Megan is highly susceptible to, regardless of shipping or opinions of characters or pairing, if they even are" category.)
Dio, sadly, did very little here besides pine for Claus when he was missing and provide a bit of necessary plot movement. Alex's engineers are still trying to get on my good side, but are trapped on the bad side thanks to their intro. Delphine is all nice and evil and diabolical. She makes me think of Jagara in Wolf's Rain, in a way. Also, given the captain Alex down down a while back and the one Vincent was (temporaily, than goodness) replaced with,

I think I need icons of Vincent, Sophia and Alex. Err...individually or in any combination. Whatever. (I am currently pretending that my Darcia icon is a suitable stand-in for an Alex icon. Hmm...I wonder which would win in an angst-off?)
