Well, in Trick, I think it's supposed to be a joke about all the dramas where there's this secondary girl who everyone fawns over and calls oh-so-pretty, and they say she's prettier than the main girl when she isn't. Trick seemed to find as many women for that as it could who, while attractive, were nowhere near as pretty as Yukie.
With Gokusen, I get the feeling that Yankumi isn't actually meant to be very pretty, but Yukie is, so they just textually ignore that they have an attractive actress...but still cater to that inthe filming.
