I was taught very little about SPAG in the public school I went to. Only through my obsessive reading since childhood did I gain whatever skills I have. Haha.
And they just keep dumbing it down. Last semester I had an English class (let's not get into it, I'll only get mad) where the professor not only "corrected" a paper of mine incorrectly (changing words and usage around) he also gave us an example paper for one of our assignments that had gotten a 4.0 in a previous class... And there were no less than 5 spelling errors per page (see how I don't even mention PAG). I nearly cried.
