As always, I feel like as much happened in this single chapter as sometimes does in an entire volume of manga.
I find it strange that taking the radio station hostage and Mrs. Bradley learning that her husband and son may be dead probably qualifies as being the “light” part of the chapter. Actually, I’m growing increasingly worried about her. While she’s totally innocent, her husband and kid are homunculi, and that’s going to have to come down on her head one way or another.
Scar’s possible concern over Mustang’s soul BEING CONSUMED BY FLAMES (love it) probably provides support to the idea that of the rather large cast, he’s probably the one who’s come the farthest.
I’m glad that Hawkeye’s bullets actually hurt Envy, even though she has to still be saved by Mustang. But then, that fits with the power structure of the world, and it’s lessened by the implication at the end that she’s figured out that he’s using a philosopher’s stone to make him powerful enough to fight Envy. (At least, that’s how I read her demands that he open his hand, and his refusal to, as well as Envy’s belief that he shouldn’t be able to use his powers the way he was.)
Last month, everyone was wondering if Envy would use Hughes or Hawkeye to get to Mustang. He tries Hughes, but it only serves to annoy Mustang. So he tries using Mustang to get to Hawkeye so he can then use Hawkeye to get to Mustang, only to have her see right through him. And seriously:
Hawkeye: “When we’re alone, the Colonel always calls me Riza.”
Envy: “Shit! You two are togeth-“
Hawkeye: “Just kidding!”
Oh Arakawa, you really do like to toy with your fans when it comes to that subject, don’t you?
And I love that when Mustang shows up after that, it isn’t a heroic appearance, but a villainous silhouette.
